Yes You still can become a tax preparer. And no it wont be a waste of your time but the only thing is you have to find a tax preparer job that haves an open.

A few states license tax preparers. You should assume that in those states it would be tough for a felon to get a license but it would probably depend upon the felony and how long it's been since your conviction. The other tough nut to crack is getting a job as a tax preparer with a felony conviction. Again, the crime and how long that it's been would matter to most employers.
You generally can't become an EA or CPA with a felony record so your career progression will be somewhat limited. Nor would you be able to become an ERO and file returns for clients electronically if you tried to start your own tax prep business.

It would also depend upon the policy of the company that you wanted to work for. Most job applications have a question about prior criminal convictions.
The IRS at this point does not have a policy about tax preparers.
