Last year (2011), i got help from free tax prep and got ALL of my withheld state tax back. My adj income was 11290, withheld was 292. I just thought i got all of them back because i made so little money. This year (2012), i made MORE money, i tried e-file by myself and the federal refund looks okay because it's bigger than last year's, but the state refund is only 17 dollars!!!! I don't get it....the state withheld more this time, i had higher income, but the refund is way lower. I checked the tax table, and i still can't make any sense about how i got state refund last year or this year. Can anyone help me here?

You didn't say what state you're in.

You might be over the limit to get your state tax forgiven, since you made more this year.

if your state tax refund is low, it skill which you had just about the best quantity of taxes withheld. A small refund is a solid ingredient- it skill which you had greater of your money with the aid of the 12 months rather of the government conserving it for you, activity unfastened.

It is lower because you made more money. That is what changed. When you make more, the state keeps more, so you get back less.
