Does the IRS fix errors on your return or?

I filed early and made an error on my return. I received a $1500 rebate and for some reason thought I only received $1200. I understand it will be delayed, but wondering if I will be required to file an amended return, or if they will simply fix the error and send my reduced refund?

Any ideas?

Do NOT submit a 1040X over the RRC. If you do, you will delay your refund by 8-12 weeks as the IRS won't know until they look closely at the 1040X that it wasn't needed.

The IRS is verifying everyone's tax return on that line. They will catch your error and they will automatically fix it.

The current plan is they fix it, issue you a notice saying they fixed it and the refund goes out maybe a week late.

The initial plan (the bottleneck) was to have someone look at your return and last year's data to try and figure out why you put down the wrong number, but since 15% of the tax returns filed screwed this one line up, they had to switch to math notices.

I have never heard of the IRS fixing an error for you. I've made mistakes in years past. One time, I caught it right away and filed my amended return immediately. The other time, they found an error and sent me notice. I had to correct the error (I wrote my daughter's SSN wrong. I transposed two numbers) and refile. It took FOREVER to get my refund that year. :(

They MAY find the error and fix it. If you end up getting your full refund, I would file an amended return because they will eventually catch up.

They will probably catch and fix the error. Just to be sure, you might contact the IRS information line and ask.
