I cannot enter the AGI number for my current return.

I requested a copy of my return by mail because for some reason it was not letting me check online.

Then I got a form showing my wages and stuff but not a regular tax return form (more like a letter)

and no AGI number with it!

Is IRS getting dumber and dumber??

You diddn't request a copy, you requested a transcript and that's what you got.

You asked for the wrong thing. You asked for a transcript instead of a copy. You have to pay to get the copy. You should be able to download one from whatever software you used last year. That's why you ALWAYS should print off a copy of your return when you file it or at least save it on your computer.

if you were stupid enough not to keep a copy of the return you submitted last year, you pay IRS $50 to get one, what you got was a free transcript and it is NOT copy of your tax return which provides all the information you need beyond what the transcript provides

No, but taxpayers appear to be getting dumber and dumber. What with failing to retain copies of their tax returns and requesting the wrong transcripts and not knowing the difference between a transcript and a copy of a return. Have to wonder who ties their shoes for them...

If you requested a copy of your tax return that would have cost you $50 and would take 8 to 10 weeks. You obviously requested a transcript, and from the sounds of things, you requested the wrong transcript. You requested an Account Transcript but you needed a Return Transcript or a Record of Account which is a combination of a Return Transcript and an Account Transcript.

At this point it would make more sense to just print the return and mail it in. Right now is a slow period for processing returns so that will be faster than requesting another transcript and waiting for it to be produced.

You asked for a transcript, which is not the same as a return. YOU are responsible for keeping copies of your return. Don't blame them.

So don't get the AGI. You don't need it.

The AGI from last year is used ONLY if you e-fiile.

Just file the old way, on paper, by mail. The previous year's AGI is not required.

you are the one who is "dumb" for not keeping a copy - as required - of your tax returns !! if you did the filing yourself, and you used an online efile program, then you can log into that program and see/print a copy of that return
