If you purchase a machine recommended by your chiropractor to help strengthen your back muscles would this qualify as a medical expense? Or would it not since it was not actually "prescribed?"

Equipment cannot be prescribed however it can be necessary and that is deduct able but the question is was it necessary or not and were you given specific exercises and trained for those as well given a specific routine. Are others using it? Of you are obese it counts easily if not it is a mixed bag depending on many factors. I have deducted equipment many times in the past and have won audits but I only take 1/2 and the customer has to show me a log book of the exercise and the medical practitioners reasoning so I know there are records to support the claim. One of the best support is will your insurance cover any of it. If insurance will pay any part then yes

Only recommended NO would have to be a prescribed item for the cost of it to be included with all of your other qualified nonreimbursed medical expense.

Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 10/30/2011

It has to be prescribed. My doctor prescribed me to buy a particular kind of shoe.
