Yesterday AND this morning this what my status showed:

Received by TurboTax | 01/13/12 06:15:28 AM
Your return has been received. You can expect to receive an email acknowledgment within 24-48 hours, indicating whether or not your e-file was accepted.

Sent to Tax Authority | 01/13/12 01:58:06 PM
The filing has been transmitted to the agency and the agency has accepted (but not acknowledged) the filing. The system is now waiting for an acknowledgment message from the agency regarding the filing.

Twenty minutes ago, it changed to:

Is this a Turbo Tax issue? Is it time to move on to a new software seeing as this is the second year in a row they have had efiling issues?

It sounds like the original transmission failed. Data gets corrupted sometimes in transmission and when that happens it must be retransmitted.

The methods that the IRS uses to verify the integrity of data is antiquated by modern standards but is also virtually error proof. As a result if a file has any errors at all it may be a day before the IRS system requests retransmission.

Most data communication systems use a simple but fast CRC check to verify the integrity of data. It works if there's a single (or odd number) bit error in a data packet but fails if there's an even number of bit errors. To ensure absolute accuracy of a received file, the IRS does a more in-depth integrity check on the whole file once it's been received. Most secure systems use an MD5 hash of the file to ensure absolute accuracy. The hashes are generated by the sender and the recipient and then are compared after the file is received. The odds of an error getting past an MD5 hash check are on the order of 1 in a quintillion. The most secure systems use a hash of the hash that adds two more steps on both ends but this guarantees absolute accuracy of the received files.

I have heard other turbo tax users have the same problem. Mine updated at about 5:30 and said it was sent at 2:36 pm and has not changed as of yet so I don't know what is going on with Turbo Tax. But I also see that the IRS shut down for maintence yesterday and has no way of letting Turbo Tax or other preparers know if the return has been accepted until it goes back on line at 12 today so maybe yours got through and we just don't know about it yet
