When the IRS does an audit, it takes the return whether it is prepared by the individual, a professional firm or a tax consultant and reviews the content. They do not charge for the audit since it is only a review as to how the tax code was applied, what was included in the deductions as well as the accuracy of the figures. The only charges will be if they find that some deductions do not qualify resulting in an under payment of taxes.

You don't pay any fees for being audited.

You pay fees for underpaying or being late or lying to the IRS, which they may discover in an audit. Or, they may find that you did everything correctly and you're set, no problems -- or that you even overpaid (very very rare). Auditing is just a random (or not so random, some claims trigger audits) check to be sure people are on the up and up.

There is no fee for being audited. The only fee, in addition to any taxes owed, will be a penalty for paying taxes late. If you wait until you file to pay a big portion of your taxes, there is a penalty. But there wouldn't be a penalty for only $300 owed.

Audit? or did you receive letter that you under reported your income (cp2000)? Since you had a tax preparer file your taxes take the letter you have and any documentation you have to the tax preparer to respond to the letter you received. You can call IRS at the phone number listed below when you go to the tax preparer and give IRS permission to speak to the tax preparer because he would know what question to ask and know how to correct the issue. Why do you need a lawyer? Why would you sue? The tax preparer filed your taxes with the information you provided him, it is your fault if you didn't provide all the information to file a correct tax return, and you signed the return agreeing that all information was correct and included in the tax return. So if you need a lawyer to sue yourself go for it!

There is no "penalty" for getting audited.

An audit is merely an examination of accounts.

A penalty is only imposed if you are found to have "cooked" the books.

No fee for being audited, just have your receipts for everything you are claiming on your Schedules. If you were to be audited you will have to show proof for every deduction, down to the penny.

Hopefully you have all your records, keep them with your copy of your tax return in a safe place.

You would owe the corrected tax. Plus interest.
