Question:
What to do about wrong routing number and account number on tax return?

Okay, so my mom's tax refund is a little late...it's been about a month since she filed with H&R Block. I was looking over her tax prep package and I noticed that both the account and routing numbers are wrong. Not by one digit either, but the entire slew of numbers is like the tax preparer pulled them out of thin air. Also, my mom's SS number is tacked on to the end of the account number. It says the account is checking when it's actually a savings account. I wonder why my mom didn't look over this information earlier, but that's beside the point. What steps should she take to resolve this problem and how long will it take? Relatively, I mean. She owes them back for the refund anticipation loan she received, but she can't pay them until she gets the refund that they apparently screwed up. They also messed up her address and have her contributing money to the Democratic Party. WTH?

Anywho...

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

That is the RAL accounting number and the routing number for H&R's bank. H&R's bank has your mom's real number because they are the one's who are giving her the money.

added: the wrong address can be fixed with a Form 8822 to the IRS (but the preparer should have entered whatever address she gave to them).

The donation thing sounds pretty fishy. They shouldn't be pushing their own political agenda without their clients' approval.

also: She shouldn't be paying them back anything for the RAL. The fees would have already come out of her expected refund.

If her tax refund was for $1500, she probably got $1000 for the RAL (just an example). H&R's bank gives her the $1000 right away and then KEEPS the full $1500 from IRS that will deposit into their bank (not into your mom's)

With a RAL, the money goes into an account Block sets up, they take their loan repayment and their fees, then send her anything that's left over.

There isn't a place on the form to contribute to a particular political party. There's a place to designate $3 to go to the presidential election campaign - that's federal funding for whoever is running, not to a particular party, in the NEXT election.

Go back to that office and find out.

Are you sure that she should be getting any more?

If she did a RAL, the routing number and account number on the 1040, will be for HSBC bank to pay back the loan.

The IRS could determine the account the direct deposit will bypass to. The IRS won't be able to alter that huge form. If the money is going to the incorrect account, the financial employer will reject it and return the money to the IRS; the IRS will mail the refund at that element.

Take the paperwork and go back to H&R Block and ask to talk to a supervisor. Don't let them refer you back to the tax preparer you used.

You need to talk to a supervisor.

H&R Bock guarantees their work... and this is obviously their fault.
