Can I deduct job-search-related cell phone calls?

Question

Last autumn while I was looking for a new job, I racked up $400 in cell phone usage (due to daytime usage from phone interviews and constantly checking voicemails). I know that some job-related expense can be claimed as a deduction, but how about cell phone usage in this case? I have the bill and can exactly specify which phone calls were for jobs.

Deduct expenses of looking for employment on Schedule A, Miscellaneous Deductions subject to 2% of AGI. Phone charges that are related to your job search would qualify.

Yes. Any number of job-search related activities are tax-deductible including telephone calls. I would strongly suggest that you make an investment in Turbo Tax (the cost of it and an tax assistance is tax-deductible) and walk through the interview to see what other deductions you might be missing, including dry cleaning expenses, travel, resume building, photocopying, etc... The amount of things that you can legally deduct is amazing -- I learned this myself several years ago. Thanks to Turbo Tax, I was able to refile and get an additonal refund. I hope this helps!

You can also deduct costs of obtaining those numbers and submitting applications/resumes for those jobs.
