IRS Audit - Received strange letter?

I received a letter that I was being audited for my 2004 return. I promptly along with my tax preparer sent all of my receipts and proof. For the next 7 mo's I have been getting a letter each month that says "We are still reviewing". Then last week a get a letter that says nothing about my 2004 return audit results. But instead says We Changed your account - We changed your 2003 federal return because of your recent audit. Please see copy of report for detailed explanation. I have received NO such report and now they are trying to bill me $10,000 for 2003! Help! What can I do???

Your tax preparer, who should be an IRS "enrolled agent", should be handling this for you. That is part of that job and all enrolled agents are certified to represent their clients before the IRS. If you have a local IRS office, ask your tax prep to go there in person to find out just what is happening on your account. If you don't have a local office, have your tax prep send a letter by certified mail (get a delivery receipt) to ask what is going on.



If your tax prep is not an enrolled agent, find another prep who is and can handle this for you. You need informed and skilled help.

Are you sure this is not a scam? If I got a letter from the irs requesting documentation. Even if it cost. I would take it to my tax preparer. A lot of mailings look like official documentation, when they are scams. I would advise you to check your credit report and make sure no accounts have not been opened up in your name.

If you think it may be fraudulent, then contact your local irs office to receive authentication that they did send you something. Then ask them about the report and why you are owing back taxes.

find a good tax lawyer/cpa who has experience in taxes and maybe a former irs employee.The irs is very secretful and deceitful.. They do however need to explain to you. They can sieze your property and your bank accounts so be careful but be smart!
